Description

Summer Haven, a small beach community in St. Johns County, Florida, has a rich history tied to the early 20th century when it became a favorite escape for local farmers seeking respite from the summer heat. The area gained prominence after Thomas A. Mellon, of the wealthy Pittsburgh Mellon family, discovered it in 1890. After severe nor’easters in 1962 and Hurricane Dora in 1964, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built granite revetments to protect the area from further damage. This construction included an 1,800-foot revetment, later extended by 1,070 feet, to safeguard the community from Atlantic storms. Today, Summer Haven remains a quiet retreat with pet-friendly access points and limited amenities like parking, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful beach experience
